Color Managed Digital Imaging & Large Format Printing for Photographers, Printmakers, and Other Artists

The Cellar is a color-managed digital imaging facility operated by the Art Department of the University of California, Santa Cruz that provides services to undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty.

THE FACILITY

The Cellar is a color-managed facility. Care has gone into making the environment visually neutral, and specialized lighting is carefully controlled to provide the optimum environment for viewing and evaluating color.

Constant monitoring and calibrating of all the stages in the printing workflow insure that users can rely on a virtual match between the displayed, on-screen image and printer output, and enjoy the concomitant savings in time and materials that such a workflow offers.

State of the art inkjet printers and color management software complete the chain, and provide predictable, consistent output that meets the standards established by the appropriate professional bodies: the CIE (Commision Internationale de l'Eclairage) and ICC (International Color Consortium).

ACCESS

During the academic year the Cellar is open to qualified users 24 hours per day, seven day per week. The facility closes each quarter on the last day of classes and reopens to users during the first week of classes, with the actual opening date determined on a class-by-class basis. The Cellar is closed during Summer Session.

Access to the Cellar is limited to students enrolled in Art Department photography classes and certain printmaking classes, for which there is a Course Materials Fee. This fee covers daily operational costs, including printer inks, but does not cover paper, which it is the user's responsibility to provide.

During the day, on-site technical support is available  on an ad hoc basis from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Evening support is provided by lab monitors seven nights per week.
